You should read the book Teaming With Microbes. It will tell you lots of great things to do with compost like making compost tea. This tea can make your yard the envy of all the neighbors. Compost is truly the most nutrient dense thing you can feed your plants. And as long as you've allowed it to break down far enough (read the book or purchase Rodale's Compost book) it will never hurt your plants the way commercial fertilizers can. It's great for the environment too!
