How can i tell what he really wants?

so i've been friends with this guy for about 4 years, but lately he's been getting suggestive when he talks to me. I want to know if he actually likes me, or he just wants to hook up.. should i just ask? [the thing about that is i dont want him to say he was just joking around and i end up looking stupid so i dont know]
