Is God's voice audible?

I've heard many people say that God have spoken to them loud and clear almost in terms of a person sitting next to you talking? I thought he spoke through the spirit of his word that you've placed inside of you. Has anyone ever heard the voice of God in an audible (person sitting next to you actually talking) way? If so explain.
